With the four sports utility vehicles it offers, Honda presents several options for everyone’s needs. If you are looking for a spacious 5- passenger model, the Honda Passport vs CR-V are both excellent choices.

Are you hesitating between the two? Your dealership in Laval has compared their features and characteristics to help you make the best decision!

Leurs différences de moteur et de consommation

Firstly, it is important to know that the Honda CR-V has recently undergone a makeover and now offers two different choices of powertrains. The first is a 1.5 L 4- cylinder turbo that provides you with 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft. maximum torque.

The second is an all-new hybrid powertrain! It consists of a 2.0 L 4- cylinder engine combined with two electric motors, for a total of 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft. maximum torque.

As one could expect, the more voluminous Passport also comes with a more powerful engine as well: a 3.5 L V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. maximum torque. The V6 is coupled with a 9- speed automatic transmission; and some might prefer the CVT transmission offered by the CR-V. All in all, its powertrain is more focused on off-road driving.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, we can expect the hybrid to stand out, with combined fuel consumption numbers of:

  • 7.8 L/100 km: for the fuel engine with front-wheel drive
  • 8.4 L/100 km: for the fuel engine with all-wheel drive
  • 5.9 L/100 km (estimate): for the hybrid powertrain

As for the Honda Passport, it still remains reasonable for a vehicle of its category, with an average of 11.3 L/100 km. So the choice really depends on your needs: are you looking for a more powerful engine or is fuel efficiency more important to you?

Difference in size and volume

Both Honda SUVs stand out, most of all, because of the category they fall under: the CR-V is a compact vehicle and the Passport is a midsize SUV. The latter is thus longer and higher and –mostly- wider; by 25.2 cm to be exact.

This means the interior will be more spacious as well, optimizing both passenger and cargo space. However, the CR-V will allow you to weave in and out of city streets much more easily, given its smaller size.

On the other hand, take note that the newest CR-V model has increased dimensions which also brings added interior space. In fact, the trunk now offers enough room for a maximum of 1,113 liters of cargo; total cargo space reaches up to 2,166 liters when seats are folded!

Of course, the Passport still offers more with a 1,430 liter trunk and maximum cargo space of 2,854 liters. In fact, both truly shine within their own category for the generous cargo space they offer.

Everything will depend on your needs, although in both cases, you will have access to a generous and comfortable interior space that can welcome up to 5- passengers.

Technologies on board

Since they are both made by the same Japanese automobile manufacturer, you can expect technologies to be quite similar. The CR-V comes with a 7- or 9- inch touch screen (depending on trim level) and the Passport includes a standard offered 8- inch screen. Both include standard features such as:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Siri Eyes Free compatibility

However, the Passport does add a bit more equipment. Wi-Fi connectivity, for example, is an option on the CR-V but is standard offered on the Passport, which also includes the CabinControl technology, allowing several users to control their own multimedia system with ease.

Both vehicles offer different sound systems depending on trim levels, but the CR-V Touring Hybrid takes the gold when it comes to sound quality, with its 12- speaker Bose sound system.

Comparing towing capacities

If you need your vehicle to tow heavy loads, this might be a deal maker or breaker in your choice between the Honda Passport vs CR-V.

In fact, the first will offer you a much higher towing capacity, for a maximum of 5,000 lb. As for the CR-V, it can still prove useful for small loads: capacity reaches 1,500 lb for the fuel engine and 1,000 lb with the hybrid powertrain.

Different trim level prices

It is obvious that the choice between the Honda Passport vs CR-V will greatly depend on your budget, especially given that the larger the vehicle, the higher the price. The 2023 Honda Passport SUV offers three trim levels:

  • Sport, starting at $ 49,140
  • Trailsport, starting at $ 53,140
  • Touring, starting at $ 55,840

When it comes to the 2023 Honda CR-V SUV, it offers three fuel trim levels –one of which can either be front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive- and one hybrid version:

  • LX 2RM, starting at $ 36,840
  • LX 4WD, starting at $ 39,640
  • Sport, starting at $ 43,540
  • EX-L, starting at $ 45,440
  • Touring hybride, starting at $ 50,940

So, considering the different size, the capacities and the price, there are several elements to take into account when choosing between the two SUVs. Shop for you next vehicle with Honda Laval, in a suburb just north of Montreal and a few kilometers away from the lower Laurentians.
