The Japanese manufacturer Honda is fully committed to the development of hybrid vehicles, as its three hybrid sedans just aren’t enough! A new Honda hybrid SUV is set to launch soon, as well as the first-ever electric Honda SUV! The automaker is known for its fuel-efficient gasoline-powered vehicles, and we expect its hybrid vehicles to be even better.

Honda Hybrid Technology

The Japanese automaker is always developing and improving its innovative hybrid technologies. As a result, not only are Honda vehicles more affordable, they are also more efficient and reliable.

Some of its hybrid models, such as the Honda Accord and the upcoming CR-V, do not require you to plug in the vehicle as they are self-charging. In fact, using regenerative braking, the battery is automatically recharged by the energy of the electric motor.

The new i-MMD technology, which stands for "Intelligent Multi Mode Drive", allows the vehicle to run in electric, thermal or hybrid mode as needed. The engine and the electric motor are always working together to deliver the best efficiency and performance.

With its plug-in hybrid vehicles you can select between electric, hybrid and gasoline modes to minimize your emissions. These vehicles also boast impressive ranges and power. Models like the Clarity are plug-in hybrids.

Introducing Honda's Hybrid Sedans

Honda currently offers three sedans with hybrid powertrains: the popular Honda Accord Hybrid, born from the gasoline car of the same name, the Honda Insight and the Honda Clarity, which is a plug-in hybrid model. Let’s take a look at what each vehicle has to offer:

Honda Accord Hybrid

The Honda Accord Hybrid is a mid-size sedan boasting a sporty and sleek exterior. It is powered by a 2.0 L 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor with a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. This sedan delivers an exciting driving experience thanks to its combined output of 212 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.

Its fuel efficiency is another great feature and its average rating is of only 5.0 L/100 km. What’s more, its CO2 emissions are 58.9 g per kilometer lower than the average mid-size car.

The Accord offers two versions to suit your preferences: the base hybrid version or the luxurious Touring version, which adds technology and luxury to the package. These are the same versions offered for the other two Honda hybrids. This 2022 hybrid is the only one available for this model year

Honda Insight Hybrid

The Honda Insight Hybrid is saying goodbye with its final 2021 model year. This Honda hybrid was the most affordable vehicle in the Honda hybrid line-up, but it had trouble standing apart from its competitors.

It is an interesting car thanks to its combined fuel consumption of only 4.9 L/100 km, or 4.6 L/100 km in the city, and offers a great range of 816 km. Its powertrain combines a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery with a 1.5 L gasoline engine, which work together to generate 151 horsepower.

The Insight is based on the Honda Civic but its front end looks more like the Honda Accord. It is a stylish hybrid sedan that offers excellent value for money.

Honda Clarity

The Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid is a compact car with an aerodynamic shape. It is instantly recognizable thanks to its L-shaped front LED headlights. Like the Insight, the Clarity will be discontinued after this year, leaving room for new models.

Since it's a plug-in hybrid, the Clarity is equipped with a huge 17 kWh lithium-ion battery. It offers a very impressive all-electric range of up to 76 km without using a drop of gasoline. Its total hybrid range is 547 km.

What’s more, it will only take you 2.5 hours to fully charge the battery using a 240V outlet. The Eco Drive button and the Eco Assist system allow you to monitor its performance and optimize fuel consumption.

The electric motor is paired to a 1.5 L gasoline engine. Like the Accord, it produces a generous 212 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.

By combining the different driving modes, you can greatly reduce your fuel consumption. In fact, its combined fuel rating is only 2.1 Le/100 km. As for carbon emissions, they are as low as 36 g/km, almost 140 g less than the average in its class!

What we know about Honda’s future

The Insight and Clarity sedans are going to be discontinued, and that’s because Honda has some great plans in store for us! We are particularly excited about the arrival of the first hybrid version of the popular Honda CR-V, which is expected to release soon.

In addition, Honda will launch its first fully-electric vehicle: the 2024 Prologue. It was developed alongside General Motors, which is making great strides in electric technologies.

Times are changing, and Honda intends to become the leader of the green movement. In fact, it recently announced its plans to stop using combustion engines by 2040.
